Bus Conductors Jailed 21years for Robbery

Three men said to be bus conductors were on Tuesday(30th Sept) pronounced guilty of armed robbery and sentenced to 21 years imprisonment each by a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja.
The convicts, Paul Sunday, 30; Adewale Taofeek, 27; and Shina Shoyeye, 24; were charged for having robbed one Stephen Ameh of his mobile telephone and money, using a stick that was shaped like a gun.
Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo, while handing down the judgment, held that prosecution had made credible, cogent and convincing evidence before the court and had proven its case beyond any reasonable doubt.
Onigbanjo added that the convicts’ guilt was established not only on the strength of their confessional statements but also based on the evidence with which the prosecution had furnished
its case.
The judge said, “I have no doubt that there was indeed robbery on the said date. The defendants were caught with an offensive weapon to wit a carved
wood shaped like a gun. The prosecution was able to establish a case of robbery. The defendants in their statements claimed to be bus conductors.
“The first defendant pointed a wooden gun and asked the victim (Ameh) to surrender his belongings. A police officer also testified that the first defendant
was handed over to him with a wooden gun.”
It was learnt from the charge sheet that the trio of Sunday, Taofeek and Shoyeye committed the offence on November 28, 2009 at No.20, Alagomeji Bus Stop.
Onigbanjo said the 21 years jail term would run concurrently starting from the date that the defendants were remanded in the prison custody.
